Springfield Gardens, Queens
Springfield Gardens is a neighborhood located in the southeastern area of Queens, New York City. It is part of Queens Community Board 12, which also includes Jamaica, St. Albans, Hollis, and other neighborhoods.
History
Springfield Gardens was developed in the 19th century on farmland that had been cleared for pastures. The name "Springfield" was given to the area by early settlers, who were reminded of their hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts. The "Gardens" part of the name refers to the large lots on which the houses were built, a feature that still characterizes the area today.
Geography
Springfield Gardens is bordered by Rosedale to the east, Laurelton and Cambria Heights to the north, St. Albans to the west, and John F. Kennedy International Airport to the south. The neighborhood is primarily residential with a mix of one- and two-family houses.
Demographics
The neighborhood is home to a diverse population, with a significant number of African American, Caribbean, and Hispanic residents. The area is also known for its strong sense of community and active civic organizations.
Transportation
Springfield Gardens is served by several New York City Bus routes, and the Long Island Rail Road's Laurelton station is nearby. The neighborhood is also close to major roadways such as the Belt Parkway and the Rockaway Boulevard.
Education
The neighborhood is served by the New York City Department of Education. There are several public and private schools in the area, including Springfield Gardens High School.
