Metro-North Railroad (MNR), also known as Metro-North, is a commuter rail service that operates in the states of New York and Connecticut. It is a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which manages public transportation in the New York City metropolitan area. Metro-North is one of the busiest commuter railroads in the United States, providing service to over 86 million passengers annually.

History[edit]

Metro-North Railroad was established in 1983, taking over operations from the Conrail commuter services. The formation of Metro-North was part of a broader effort to improve and modernize commuter rail services in the New York metropolitan area. The railroad has since undergone significant expansions and upgrades to better serve its passengers.

Operations[edit]

Metro-North operates five main lines:

The Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines are the primary lines, with the latter two extending into Connecticut. The Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines are operated under contract with New Jersey Transit.

Stations[edit]

Metro-North serves 124 stations across its network. Major stations include:

Rolling Stock[edit]

Metro-North's fleet consists of various types of electric and diesel-electric multiple units, as well as locomotives and coaches. The primary electric multiple units are the M8 cars used on the New Haven Line, while the M7 cars are used on the Hudson and Harlem lines. Diesel services are operated with locomotives such as the P32AC-DM and coaches like the Shoreliner series.

Future Developments[edit]

Metro-North is continually working on projects to expand and improve its services. Notable future developments include the Penn Station Access project, which aims to provide direct Metro-North service to Penn Station in Manhattan.
