Revolution Analytics was a statistical software company focused on developing and supporting the open-source R programming language for statistical computing and predictive analytics. The company was founded in 2007 and was headquartered in Mountain View, California.

History[edit]

Revolution Analytics was originally known as Revolution Computing. The company was founded by Norman Nie, who was also one of the co-founders of SPSS Inc., a software company specializing in statistical analysis. Revolution Analytics aimed to bring the power of R to a broader audience by enhancing its capabilities and making it more accessible to enterprises.

In 2015, Revolution Analytics was acquired by Microsoft. This acquisition allowed Microsoft to integrate R into its data platforms, including Microsoft Azure and SQL Server, thereby expanding the reach and utility of R in enterprise environments.

Products[edit]

Revolution Analytics developed several products to enhance the functionality and performance of R:

  • Revolution R Open: An enhanced distribution of R that included additional capabilities for performance and reproducibility.
  • Revolution R Enterprise: A commercial version of R that provided advanced analytics capabilities, including big data support and integration with enterprise systems.
  • Revolution R Plus: A subscription-based service that offered technical support and updates for Revolution R Open.

Contributions to R Community[edit]

Revolution Analytics made significant contributions to the R community by sponsoring the development of various R packages and tools. The company also supported the R Consortium, an organization dedicated to the growth and development of R.

Acquisition by Microsoft[edit]

The acquisition by Microsoft in 2015 marked a significant milestone for Revolution Analytics. Post-acquisition, the technology and expertise of Revolution Analytics were integrated into Microsoft's data platforms, enhancing their analytics capabilities. This integration allowed users to leverage R for advanced analytics within the Microsoft ecosystem.
