Reid Hoffman

Reid Hoffman is an American entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and author, best known as one of the co-founders of LinkedIn, a business-oriented social network used primarily for professional networking and career development. Born on August 5, 1967, in Palo Alto, California, Hoffman has played a significant role in the development of the internet economy, particularly in the Silicon Valley tech scene.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Reid Garrett Hoffman was born and raised in the heart of Silicon Valley. He developed an early interest in technology and entrepreneurship. After Stanford, he was awarded a Marshall Scholarship, which allowed him to study at the University of Oxford, where he earned a Master's degree in Philosophy.
Career[edit]
PayPal[edit]
Hoffman's professional career began at Apple, where he worked on eWorld, an early attempt at creating a social network. eWorld was eventually shut down, but Hoffman's interest in the internet and its potential for transforming society remained strong. He later joined Fujitsu before making a significant career move to become one of the founding board members of PayPal, an online payment system that became one of the most successful fintech startups of its time.
LinkedIn[edit]
In 2002, Hoffman co-founded LinkedIn, the world's largest professional network, with the vision of creating a platform where professionals could connect, share opportunities, and enhance their careers. As CEO, Hoffman led LinkedIn through its initial growth phases before stepping down in 2009 to become Executive Chairman. LinkedIn went public in 2011 and was later acquired by Microsoft in 2016 for $26.2 billion, marking one of the largest acquisitions in the tech industry.
Venture Capital[edit]
After LinkedIn, Hoffman transitioned into venture capital, joining Greylock Partners, a leading Silicon Valley VC firm. At Greylock, Hoffman focuses on early-stage investments in technology companies, leveraging his experience and network to mentor the next generation of entrepreneurs. He has invested in several successful startups, including Airbnb, Facebook, and Convoy.
Philanthropy and Public Engagement[edit]
Beyond his roles in business, Hoffman is active in philanthropy and public discourse. He has contributed to various causes and organizations focused on education, entrepreneurship, and public policy.
