Persian Gulf (pronunciation: /ˈpɜːrʒən ɡʌlf/) is a mediterranean sea in Western Asia. The body of water is an extension of the Indian Ocean (Gulf of Oman) through the Strait of Hormuz and lies between Iran to the northeast and the Arabian Peninsula to the southwest.[1] The Shatt al-Arab river delta forms the northwest shoreline.
Etymology
The name "Persian Gulf" is derived from the historical and cultural ties with the ancient Persians, one of the great civilizations of the Middle East. The term "Persian" is used as an adjective to refer to anything related to the ancient nation of Persia, now known as Iran.[2]
