Indian Ocean
Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean (pronunciation: /ˈɪndiən ˈoʊʃən/) is the third-largest of the world's oceanic divisions, covering 70,560,000 km² (27,240,000 sq mi) or 19.8% of the water on the Earth's surface. It is bounded by Asia on the north, on the west by Africa, on the east by Australia, and on the south by the Southern Ocean or, depending on definition, by Antarctica.
Etymology
The name Indian Ocean is derived from the geographical location of the ocean, which is situated to the south of the Indian subcontinent. The term was first used in the early 16th century by European geographers to refer to the eastern part of the waters known to the Greeks as the "Erythraean Sea".
