Oral Pathology

Oral Pathology (pronounced: /ˈɔːrəl pəˈθɒlədʒi/) is a specialized branch of Pathology that deals with the diagnosis and study of diseases affecting the Oral Cavity and surrounding structures.

Etymology

The term 'Oral Pathology' is derived from two words. 'Oral' comes from the Latin word 'os, oris' meaning mouth, and 'Pathology' is derived from the Greek words 'pathos' meaning suffering and 'logia' meaning study of. Thus, Oral Pathology is the study of diseases of the mouth.

Definition

Oral Pathology is the discipline within dentistry that is concerned with the identification, classification, and overall management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. This includes the teeth, the jawbones, the soft tissues of the mouth, and the salivary glands.
