Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The city covers an area of 620 square miles, making it one of the largest cities in the United States by land area.
History[edit]
Oklahoma City was settled on April 22, 1889, during the event known as the "Land Run". The city was the scene of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, one of the deadliest acts of terrorism in American history.
Geography[edit]
Oklahoma City lies along one of the primary travel corridors into Texas and Mexico, and is about three hours by car to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The city is in the Frontier Country region in the center of the state, making it an ideal location for state government.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Oklahoma City, once just a regional power center of government and energy exploration, has since diversified to include the sectors of information technology, services, health services, and administration. The city is headquarters to two Fortune 500 companies: Chesapeake Energy Corporation and Devon Energy Corporation, as well as being home to Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores, ranked thirteenth on Forbes' list of private companies.
Culture[edit]
Oklahoma City is home to a rich culture with a deep Southern heritage. The city is known for its cowboy culture and capitol complex, surrounded by working oil wells. The city's arts district, Paseo Arts District, is home to a number of galleries and studios, while the city's Bricktown neighborhood is a popular destination for nightlife and entertainment.
Education[edit]
The city is home to several colleges and universities, including the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University, and Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Public Schools is the largest school district in the state of Oklahoma.
Sports[edit]
Oklahoma City is home to several professional sports teams, including the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association.
