United States of America
United States of America
United States of America (pronunciation: /juːˈnaɪ.tɪd ˈsteɪts əv əˈmɛr.ɪ.kə/), often referred to as the USA or America, is a country primarily located in North America. It consists of 50 states, a federal district, and five territories.
Etymology
The name "America" is derived from the Latin version of the name of the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first to suggest that the New World discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 was not the eastern edge of Asia, but an entirely separate landmass. The "United States" part of the country's name comes from its original formation of states united under a new, singular government.
