Ocular melanoma
Ocular Melanoma
Ocular melanoma (pronounced: oh-kyuh-luhr mel-uh-noh-muh), also known as uveal melanoma, is a rare form of cancer that develops in the cells that produce pigment in the eye. It is the most common type of eye cancer in adults.
Etymology
The term "ocular" is derived from the Latin word "oculus" meaning "eye", and "melanoma" comes from the Greek words "melas" (black) and "-oma" (tumor).
Types
Ocular melanoma can be classified into three types based on the part of the eye where it originates:
- Iris Melanoma: This is the least common and least aggressive form of ocular melanoma. It originates in the front part of the eye.
- Ciliary Body Melanoma: This form of ocular melanoma originates in the middle part of the eye and is more aggressive than iris melanoma.
- Choroidal Melanoma: This is the most common and most aggressive form of ocular melanoma. It originates in the back part of the eye.
Symptoms
Common symptoms of ocular melanoma include blurred vision, sudden loss of vision, floaters (spots or squiggles drifting in the field of vision), and a change in the shape of the pupil. However, it's important to note that ocular melanoma often causes no early signs or symptoms.
Diagnosis
Ocular melanoma is typically diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. Additional tests such as ultrasound, angiography, and biopsy may also be used.
Treatment
Treatment options for ocular melanoma include radiation therapy, laser therapy, surgery, and in some cases, chemotherapy or immunotherapy.
Prognosis
The prognosis for ocular melanoma varies greatly and depends on the size and location of the tumor, as well as the patient's overall health.
