Dame Nancy Jane Rothwell (born 2 October 1955) is a British physiologist and academic, currently serving as the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester. She is known for her research in the field of neuroscience, particularly in relation to stroke and brain inflammation.

Early life and education

Nancy Rothwell was born in Tarleton, Lancashire, England. She attended Penwortham Girls' High School and later studied physiology at the University of London, where she earned her BSc and PhD degrees.

Career

Rothwell began her academic career at the University of Cambridge before moving to the University of Manchester in 1987. She has held various positions at the university, including Vice-President for Research and Deputy President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. In 2010, she was appointed as the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, becoming the first woman to hold this position.

Research

Rothwell's research has primarily focused on the mechanisms of brain damage and repair following stroke and other forms of brain injury. Her work has contributed to the understanding of cytokines and their role in neuroinflammation. She has published numerous papers in leading scientific journals and has been recognized for her contributions to neuroscience.

Awards and honors

Rothwell has received several awards and honors for her work, including being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci). In 2003, she was awarded a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her services to science.
