N-Desalkylflurazepam

N-Desalkylflurazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative and an active metabolite of several other benzodiazepine drugs including flurazepam, flutoprazepam, and midazolam. It is long-acting, and has anxiolytic properties.

Pharmacology

N-Desalkylflurazepam exhibits anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant properties. It acts on benzodiazepine receptors, which are found in high numbers in areas of the brain involved in emotion and memory, such as the hippocampus.

Metabolism

N-Desalkylflurazepam is metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. It is excreted in the urine and feces.

Side effects

The side effects of N-Desalkylflurazepam are similar to those of other benzodiazepines, and may include drowsiness, ataxia, dysarthria, and fatigue. Long-term use of N-Desalkylflurazepam may result in tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal syndrome upon discontinuation.
