Marathon

Marathon (pronunciation: /ˈmarəˌTHän/) is a long-distance race with an official distance of 42.195 kilometers, usually run as a road race. The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens.

Etymology

The term Marathon comes from the Greek legend of Pheidippides, who was said to have run the distance from the city of Marathon to Athens to deliver the news of a military victory. The word is derived from the town of Marathon in Greece.
