Lititz, Pennsylvania
Lititz is a borough in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Known for its rich history and beautiful architecture, Lititz is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
History
Lititz was founded by members of the Moravian Church in 1756 and was named after a castle (mentioned form of name is Litice) in Bohemia near the village of Kunvald where the ancient Moravian Brothers' Church had been founded in 1457. The roots of the Moravian Church in Lititz can be traced back to Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf, a nobleman who was a patron of the church.
Geography
Lititz is located in northern Lancaster County, approximately 8 miles north of the city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The borough is surrounded by Warwick Township, and is part of the Lancaster Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Economy
Lititz is home to several large businesses, including Wilbur Chocolate Company, one of America's oldest chocolate companies, and Woodstream Corporation, a manufacturer of humane animal traps. The town's vibrant economy is also supported by a variety of small businesses, ranging from restaurants and shops to professional services.
Culture
Lititz is known for its annual events such as the Lititz Fire & Ice Festival, the Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show, and the Lititz Rotary Craft Show. The town also hosts the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States.
Education
The Warwick School District serves the borough of Lititz and the surrounding Warwick Township. The district operates one high school, one middle school, and several elementary schools.
Notable people
Several notable individuals hail from Lititz, including John Fass, a renowned graphic designer and printer, and Mary Penry, the first single woman missionary of the Moravian Church.
