List of national independence days
(Redirected from Independence Day)
The list of national independence days includes the dates on which countries around the world celebrate their independence. These days often commemorate the nation's liberation from colonial rule, the establishment of a sovereign state, or the unification of a country. Independence days are typically marked by celebrations, parades, and national ceremonies.
Africa
Many African countries celebrate their independence days in the 20th century, following the decolonization period after World War II. For example, Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957.
Americas
In the Americas, independence days often commemorate liberation from European colonial powers. For instance, the United States celebrates its independence on July 4, marking the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
North America
The United States, Canada, and Mexico each have distinct independence celebrations. Canada Day on July 1 marks the confederation of Canada in 1867, while Mexico celebrates its independence from Spain on September 16.
South America
Countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Chile celebrate their independence from Spanish and Portuguese rule. Brazil's independence day is September 7, 1822, when it declared independence from Portugal.
Asia
Asian countries have diverse independence days, often reflecting liberation from colonial powers or the end of occupation. For example, India celebrates its independence from British rule on August 15, 1947.
Europe
In Europe, independence days can also mark the reunification or establishment of a nation-state. For instance, Germany celebrates its reunification on October 3, known as the Day of German Unity.
Oceania
Countries in Oceania, such as Australia and New Zealand, have national days that reflect their unique histories. Australia Day on January 26 marks the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, while New Zealand celebrates Waitangi Day on February 6, commemorating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.
