Hindi (IPA: /ˈhɪndi/), also known as Hindustani (IPA: /hɪnˈdʊstɑːni/), is a language predominantly spoken in India and Nepal. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India and the first language of more than 41% of the Indian population.
Etymology
The term Hindi originally was used to refer to inhabitants of the region east of the Indus River. It was borrowed from Classical Persian Hindī (Iranian Persian Hendī), meaning "Indian", from the proper noun Hind "India".
Pronunciation
Hindi is pronounced as /ˈhɪndi/ in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The stress is on the first syllable.
