Indus River
Indus River
Indus River (pronunciation: /ˈɪndəs/), also known as the Sindhu River, is one of the longest rivers in Asia. Originating in the Tibetan plateau in the vicinity of Lake Mansarovar, the river runs a course through the Ladakh region of India, towards the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan, and then flows in a southerly direction along the entire length of Pakistan to merge into the Arabian Sea near the port city of Karachi in Sindh.
Etymology
The name Indus is derived from the Sanskrit word Sindhu, which was used by the locals to refer to the river. The Ancient Greeks modified it to Indos (pronunciation: /ˈɪndoʊs/), and it eventually became Indus in English.
