Esomeprazole Magnesium

Esomeprazole magnesium (pronunciation: eh-so-mep-ra-zole mag-nee-zee-um) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems such as acid reflux and peptic ulcers. It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes.

Etymology

The term "Esomeprazole" is derived from the Greek words "eso" meaning "inside" and "meprazole" which is a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. "Magnesium" is a chemical element with the symbol Mg and atomic number 12. It is a shiny gray solid which bears a close physical resemblance to the other five elements in the second column (group 2, or alkaline earth metals) of the periodic table.

Usage

Esomeprazole magnesium is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis (damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid).
