Caucasus Mountains

Caucasus Mountains (pronunciation: kaw-kuh-suhs moun-tuhnz) is a mountain range located in Eurasia between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It is considered a boundary between Eastern Europe and Western Asia.

Etymology

The term "Caucasus" is derived from the Scythian kaukasos, which means "snowy mountain". The word "mountain" comes from the Latin montem or mons, meaning "mount".

Geography

The Caucasus Mountains are divided into two systems: the Greater Caucasus in the north and the Lesser Caucasus in the south. The Greater Caucasus includes Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe. The Lesser Caucasus is home to a number of important historical sites, including the ancient kingdom of Colchis.

Flora and Fauna

The Caucasus Mountains are known for their rich biodiversity, with a wide variety of plant and animal species. The region is home to the Caucasian Fir and the Caucasian Rhododendron, among other plant species. Animal species found in the region include the Caucasian Leopard and the Caucasian Black Grouse.
