Antonio Damasio (pronunciation: /ænˈtoʊnioʊ dəˈmɑːsioʊ/) is a prominent neuroscientist, neurologist, and professor known for his research in several areas of the neuroscience field, including emotion, memory, and consciousness.

Etymology

The name Antonio is of Latin origin, derived from the Roman family name Antonius. Damasio is a common surname in Portugal, the country of Antonio's birth.

Biography

Antonio Damasio was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1944. He studied medicine at the University of Lisbon Medical School, where he also completed his neurology residency. He later moved to the United States, where he continued his research and teaching career. He is currently the David Dornsife Professor of Neuroscience, Psychology, and Philosophy at the University of Southern California (USC) and the director of the Brain and Creativity Institute.

Contributions to Neuroscience

Damasio's work has been influential in understanding the biological basis of cognition and behavior. His research has shown that emotions play a central role in social cognition and decision-making. His books, including "Descartes' Error" and "The Feeling of What Happens," have been translated into over 30 languages and are taught in universities worldwide.
