Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders were a professional American football team based in Oakland, California. The team was established in 1960 and was a member of the American Football League (AFL) before joining the National Football League (NFL) in the AFL-NFL merger of 1970. The Raiders were known for their distinctive silver and black uniforms, their passionate fan base, and their commitment to excellence.

Founding and Early Years[edit]
The Oakland Raiders were founded in 1960 as a charter member of the AFL. The team struggled in its early years, but the hiring of head coach Al Davis in 1963 marked a turning point. Davis implemented a vertical passing game and a strong defensive strategy, which became hallmarks of the Raiders' style.
AFL Success and NFL Merger[edit]
Under Davis's leadership, the Raiders quickly became one of the most successful teams in the AFL. They won their first AFL Championship in 1967, defeating the Houston Oilers. This victory earned them a spot in Super Bowl II, where they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers.
In 1970, the AFL merged with the NFL, and the Raiders became part of the newly formed American Football Conference (AFC) West division.
1970s Dominance[edit]
The 1970s were a period of dominance for the Raiders. Under head coach John Madden, the team won its first Super Bowl in 1976, defeating the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI. The Raiders were known for their tough, physical style of play and their "Commitment to Excellence" motto.
1980s and Relocation[edit]
In 1980, the Raiders won their second Super Bowl, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV. In 1982, the team relocated to Los Angeles, becoming the Los Angeles Raiders. They won their third Super Bowl in 1983, defeating the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII.
Return to Oakland[edit]
The Raiders returned to Oakland in 1995. Despite some successful seasons, the team struggled to regain its former glory. They reached the Super Bowl XXXVII in 2002 but were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Las Vegas Relocation[edit]
In 2020, the Raiders relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, becoming the Las Vegas Raiders.
