History[edit]
The team was founded in 1933 by Art Rooney and was originally known as the Pittsburgh Pirates, sharing the name with the city's Major League Baseball team. In 1940, the team was renamed the Pittsburgh Steelers to reflect the city's heritage in the steel industry.

The team's mascot is Steely McBeam, a character that represents the city's steel industry heritage.
Rivalries[edit]
