Atlanta Falcons[edit]

The Atlanta Falcons are a professional American football team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Falcons compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league's National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The team was established in 1965 and has since become a prominent franchise in the NFL.

Founding and Early Years[edit]

The Atlanta Falcons were awarded as an expansion team in 1965, with their first season taking place in 1966. The team was founded by Rankin M. Smith, a successful insurance executive, who paid an entry fee of $8.5 million to join the NFL. The Falcons played their first game on September 11, 1966, against the Los Angeles Rams, marking the beginning of their journey in professional football.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Falcons experienced periods of both struggle and success. The team made its first playoff appearance in 1978 under head coach Leeman Bennett.
