São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, and the Americas, and the Southern Hemisphere. It is also the most populous city in the Southern Hemisphere. São Paulo is the capital of the São Paulo state and the main financial, corporate, and commercial center of South America.

History[edit]

São Paulo was founded in 1554 by Jesuits missionaries Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta. The city's growth was fueled by coffee cultivation in the 19th century, and by the influx of immigrants from Europe, the Middle East, and Japan.

Geography[edit]

São Paulo is located in Southeastern Brazil, in the southeastern part of the São Paulo state. The city is situated on a plateau, the Brazilian Highlands, at an altitude of approximately 760 meters above sea level.

São Paulo is the economic engine of Brazil, with an economy larger than that of many countries. The city is home to the B3 Stock Exchange, the largest stock exchange in Latin America. São Paulo's economy is diverse, with sectors such as finance, manufacturing, commerce, technology, and services.
