Unum is a Fortune 500 company that provides financial protection benefits such as disability, life, accident, critical illness, dental and vision insurance. The company is based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with additional offices in the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland. Unum is one of the leading providers of employee benefits products and services, and the largest provider of disability insurance in the United States.

History

Unum was founded in 1848 as Union Mutual Life Insurance, and it was the first company in the United States to introduce group disability policies in 1939. The company went through several mergers and acquisitions over the years, including the merger with Provident Companies in 1999 to form UnumProvident, and the acquisition of Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company in 2004. In 2007, the company changed its name to Unum.

Unum offers a wide range of insurance products and services, including:

  • Disability Insurance: This provides a portion of income for employees who are unable to work due to illness or injury.
  • Life Insurance: This provides a financial benefit to beneficiaries upon the death of the insured.
