Etymology

The name "UnitedHealth Group" is derived from the company's original business of providing health insurance, with "United" signifying the company's goal of uniting patients, providers, and payers to improve healthcare outcomes.

History

UnitedHealth Group was founded in 1977 by Richard Burke and went public in 1984. It was initially a part of the UnitedHealthcare Corporation but was spun off in 1998 to become an independent company.

UnitedHealth Group operates through two main divisions: UnitedHealthcare and Optum. UnitedHealthcare provides health benefit plans for individuals, employers, and Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
