Humana Inc. is an American health insurance company based in Louisville, Kentucky. Founded in 1961 by David A. Jones Sr. and Wendell Cherry, Humana has grown to become one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States. The company offers a wide range of health insurance products and services, including Medicare and Medicaid plans, as well as individual and group health insurance.
History
Humana was originally established as a nursing home company called Extendicare. In 1972, the company sold its nursing home business and began to focus on hospitals, changing its name to Humana in 1974. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Humana expanded rapidly, becoming one of the largest hospital companies in the United States.
In the 1990s, Humana shifted its focus from hospitals to health insurance. The company divested its hospital operations and concentrated on expanding its health insurance offerings. This strategic shift allowed Humana to become a major player in the health insurance industry.
Operations
Humana provides a variety of health insurance products, including:
- Medicare Advantage plans
- Medicare Part D prescription drug plans
- Medicaid plans
- Individual and family health insurance plans
- Group health insurance plans
The company also offers wellness programs and services aimed at improving the health and well-being of its members.
Corporate Social Responsibility
Humana is committed to corporate social responsibility and sustainability. The company focuses on initiatives that promote health and well-being, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. Humana's efforts include reducing its carbon footprint, supporting local communities, and promoting diversity and inclusion within the workplace.
Controversies
Like many large health insurance companies, Humana has faced controversies and legal challenges. These have included issues related to pricing, coverage, and regulatory compliance. The company has worked to address these challenges through policy changes and increased transparency.
