Dental (/ˈdɛntəl/), from the Latin dens meaning tooth, is a term related to the structure and care of teeth. It is a branch of medicine that involves diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, commonly in the dentition but also the oral mucosa, and of adjacent and related structures and tissues, particularly in the maxillofacial (jaw and facial) area.

Etymology

The term dental is derived from the Latin word dens, which means tooth. The suffix -al is used to form adjectives from nouns or from other adjectives and means 'relating to, of the kind of, having the form or character of' that specified.
