Los Angeles (officially known as the City of Los Angeles and often abbreviated as L.A.) is the largest city in the state of California and the second-largest city in the United States. It is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and the entertainment industry.

History

Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, becoming part of the United States.

Geography

Los Angeles is located in Southern California on the Pacific Coast. It is bordered by the San Gabriel Mountains to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the San Fernando Valley to the north.
