Humboldt County is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 136,463. The county seat is Eureka. Humboldt County comprises the Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna, CA Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the far North Coast, about 270 miles north of San Francisco.

History

Humboldt County was formed in 1853 from parts of Trinity and Mendocino counties. The county derives its name from Humboldt Bay, which was named after the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,052 square miles, of which 3,568 square miles is land and 484 square miles (12%) is water. The county's diverse geography includes coastline, redwood forests, and mountain ranges.

As of the 2020 census, there were 136,463 people, 55,912 households, and 31,238 families residing in the county. The population density was 38 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 82.1% White, 1.7% Black or African American, 5.7% Native American, 2.4% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 3.8% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. 9.5% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Economy

The economy of Humboldt County is based on timber, fishing, and tourism. The county is known for its redwood forests, which attract visitors from around the world. Agriculture also plays a significant role, with dairy farming and cattle ranching being prominent.

Humboldt County is home to Humboldt State University, located in Arcata. The county also has several community colleges and public school districts.
