Krystal is a fast-food restaurant chain headquartered in Dunwoody, Georgia, in the United States. The restaurant is known for its small, square hamburgers known as "Krystals" and is often compared to the northern United States restaurant chain White Castle.

History[edit]

Krystal was founded in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1932 by Rody Davenport Jr. and his partner J. Glenn Sherrill. They were inspired by the success of White Castle and sought to create a similar fast-food chain in the South. The name "Krystal" was derived from the notion of the food being so good, customers would see it as "crystal clear" in quality.

Menu[edit]

Krystal's menu primarily consists of its signature small, square hamburgers known as "Krystals". Other items on the menu include chicken sandwiches, Krystal Chiks, Krystal Pups (hot dogs), corn dogs, and breakfast items. The restaurant also offers a variety of sides including fries, onion rings, and chili.

Locations[edit]

As of 2020, Krystal operates more than 300 restaurants in the Southern United States, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

In popular culture[edit]

Krystal has been featured in various forms of media and popular culture. The restaurant is known for its annual "Krystal Square Off" eating contest, which has been featured on ESPN. The contest involves competitors eating as many Krystal burgers as they can in a set amount of time.
