Neurochemicals are endogenous compounds that participate in neurotransmission. They include a variety of compounds such as neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and psychopharmaceuticals. Neurochemicals are responsible for the maintenance of neuronal function and neural communication, and play a crucial role in neurological disorders and mental health.

Neurotransmitters[edit]

Neurotransmitters are a type of neurochemical that transmit signals across a neural synapse. They are released from the axon terminal of a neuron in response to an action potential, and bind to receptors on the post-synaptic neuron. This binding can either excite or inhibit the post-synaptic neuron, depending on the type of neurotransmitter and receptor involved.

Neuropeptides[edit]

Psychopharmaceuticals can be used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Role in Neurological Disorders and Mental Health[edit]

Neurochemicals play a crucial role in the development and progression of various neurological disorders and mental health conditions. Imbalances in neurotransmitters can lead to conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and major depressive disorder.
