Whitestone, Queens
Whitestone, Queens is a residential neighborhood located in the northernmost part of the New York City borough of Queens. It is bordered by the East River to the north, the Whitestone Expressway to the west, and the neighborhood of Flushing to the south.
History
Whitestone was settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, and was named for a large white boulder that was a local landmark. The boulder, known as the Whitestone Rock, was used as a navigational aid by sailors in the East River. The neighborhood was largely rural until the late 19th century, when it began to be developed as a residential area.
Geography
Whitestone is located on the northern shore of Queens, overlooking the East River. The neighborhood is characterized by its hilly terrain and large, single-family homes. The area is known for its quiet, suburban atmosphere and its views of the Manhattan skyline.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, Whitestone had a population of approximately 30,000. The neighborhood is predominantly white, with a significant number of residents of Italian and Greek descent. There is also a growing Asian population, particularly of Chinese and Korean descent.
Transportation
Whitestone is served by several bus lines operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The neighborhood is also accessible by car via the Whitestone Expressway, which connects to the Cross Island Parkway and the Long Island Expressway.
Education
Whitestone is part of the New York City Department of Education's District 25. The neighborhood is home to several public and private schools, including P.S. 79, J.H.S. 194, and the Whitestone Academy.
Notable people
Several notable people have lived in Whitestone, including actress Susan Sarandon, musician Paul Simon, and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.
