Vespaiola
Vespaiola is a white Italian wine grape variety that is grown in the Veneto region of northeast Italy. The grape is one of the few Italian varieties to be grown in a pergola style. The grape is also one of the permitted varieties in the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wine Breganze.
History[edit]
The name Vespaiola is derived from the Italian word vespa which means wasp. The grape gets its name from the sweetness of the grapes which attract wasps (vespa). The grape is believed to have originated in the Veneto region and has had a long history of cultivation in this area.
Viticulture[edit]
Vespaiola is a late ripening grape variety that is often harvested in late September to early October. The grape has a natural high sugar content which makes it a favorable grape for producing sweet dessert wines. The grape is also used in the production of dry wines.
Wine regions[edit]
Vespaiola is primarily grown in the Veneto region of Italy. The grape is a permitted variety in the Breganze DOC where it is used to produce both dry and sweet wines. The grape is also grown in the neighboring regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige.
Styles[edit]
Vespaiola wines are typically high in alcohol and have a strong aroma. The wines are often described as having flavors of honey and ripe fruit. The grape's high sugar content makes it a popular choice for dessert wines. However, the grape is also used to produce dry wines which are typically full-bodied with a high alcohol content.
Food pairing[edit]
Vespaiola wines, particularly the sweet dessert wines, pair well with a variety of foods. The wines are often served with desserts such as fruit tarts and pastries. The wines also pair well with blue cheese and foie gras.
