Vapnik–Chervonenkis theory
Vapnik–Chervonenkis theory (VC theory) is a fundamental framework in computational learning theory and statistics that aims to understand the learning process from a theoretical standpoint. Named after Vladimir Vapnik and Alexey Chervonenkis, who introduced the concepts in the early 1970s, VC theory provides a quantitative characterization of the capacity of a learning machine to generalize beyond its training data. This capacity is measured by the Vapnik–Chervonenkis dimension (VC dimension), a key concept in the theory that helps in understanding the complexity of statistical models.
Overview
VC theory addresses the problem of supervised learning, where a learning algorithm tries to infer a function from labeled training data. The theory's central question is how well the inferred function will perform on unseen data, a property known as generalization. The VC dimension provides a measure of the capacity of a class of functions to shatter, or perfectly classify, sets of points.
