Uva di Troia
Uva di Troia is a red wine grape variety primarily grown in the Apulia region of Italy. Known for its deep color and robust flavor, Uva di Troia is a key component in several DOC and IGT wines. The grape is also referred to as Nero di Troia, highlighting its dark berry characteristics.
History[edit]
The origins of Uva di Troia are somewhat obscure, but it is believed to have ancient roots in the region of Apulia. The name "Troia" is thought to be derived from the town of Troia, located in the province of Foggia. Some legends suggest that the grape was brought to Italy by the ancient Greeks, although there is no definitive evidence to support this claim.
Viticulture[edit]
Uva di Troia is a late-ripening variety, typically harvested in late September to early October. The grape thrives in the warm, dry climate of Apulia, where it benefits from the region's abundant sunshine and well-drained soils. The vines are often trained in the traditional alberello system, which helps to manage the vigor of the plant and improve grape quality.

Wine Characteristics[edit]
Wines made from Uva di Troia are known for their deep ruby color and full-bodied structure. They often exhibit flavors of dark berries, such as blackberry and plum, along with notes of spice, leather, and tobacco. The wines have moderate acidity and tannins, making them suitable for aging. Uva di Troia is often blended with other local varieties, such as Montepulciano and Bombino Nero, to create balanced and complex wines.
Wine Regions[edit]
Uva di Troia is predominantly grown in the northern part of Apulia, particularly in the provinces of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Bari, and Foggia. It is a significant component in several DOC wines, including Castel del Monte DOC, Cacc'e Mmitte di Lucera DOC, and Rosso Barletta DOC.
