Toast (Medical)

Toast (/toʊst/) is a common food item, typically made from sliced bread exposed to heat. While not a medical term per se, toast is often recommended in various dietary contexts within the medical field, such as the BRAT diet for patients with gastrointestinal issues.

Etymology

The word "toast" comes from the Latin tostum, meaning "to burn or scorch".

Medical Context

In the medical field, toast is often recommended as part of the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast). This diet is often suggested for patients suffering from gastroenteritis or gastritis, as these foods are bland and can help make stools firmer.

Toast can also be a part of a patient's diet who is recovering from surgery, as it is easy to digest and low in fiber. It is also often used in diets for patients with dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), as it can be softened with liquids to make swallowing easier.
