The Tehran Conference was a strategic meeting held during World War II between the leaders of the Allied powers. The conference took place from November 28 to December 1, 1943, in Tehran, Iran. It was the first of the World War II conferences of the "Big Three" Allied leaders: Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States, and Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom.

Background

The Tehran Conference was convened to discuss the next phases of the war against the Axis powers, particularly the opening of a second front in Western Europe. The meeting followed the Cairo Conference, where Roosevelt and Churchill had discussed the war in Asia and the Pacific with Chiang Kai-shek of China.

Key Decisions

Several critical decisions were made during the Tehran Conference:

  • **Operation Overlord**: The Allies agreed to launch Operation Overlord, the code name for the Battle of Normandy, in May 1944. This decision was crucial for the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany.
  • **Eastern Front**: Stalin agreed to launch a major offensive on the Eastern Front to coincide with the Western Allies' invasion of France, thereby putting additional pressure on German forces.
  • **Post-War Plans**: The leaders discussed the post-war reorganization of Europe and the establishment of the United Nations to ensure future global peace and security.

Participants

The main participants of the Tehran Conference were:

Outcomes

The Tehran Conference marked a turning point in World War II, as it solidified the cooperation between the Allied powers and set the stage for the eventual defeat of the Axis powers. The decisions made at the conference had a significant impact on the course of the war and the post-war world order.
