Nazi Germany, also known as the Third Reich (German: Drittes Reich), is the common English name for Germany between 1933 and 1945 when Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party (NSDAP) controlled the country through a dictatorship.

Etymology

The term "Nazi" is a short form of the German Nationalsozialist, referring to a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party. The term "Third Reich" (Drittes Reich) refers to Hitler's regime as the successor to the Holy Roman Empire (the "First Reich") and the German Empire (the "Second Reich").
