Stanislav Grof

Stanislav Grof (born July 1, 1931) is a Czech psychiatrist and one of the founders of transpersonal psychology. He is known for his research into the therapeutic potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness, including the use of psychedelic substances and Holotropic Breathwork.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Stanislav Grof was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He initially pursued a career in medicine and later specialized in psychiatry. Grof received his medical degree from Charles University in Prague and completed his psychiatric training at the Psychiatric Research Institute in Prague.

Career[edit]

Grof began his career as a researcher at the Psychiatric Research Institute in Prague, where he conducted early studies on the effects of LSD on the human psyche. His work in this area led to significant contributions to the field of psychedelic therapy.

Transpersonal Psychology[edit]

In the late 1960s, Grof moved to the United States and became involved with the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. It was here that he, along with Abraham Maslow and others, developed the field of transpersonal psychology, which explores the spiritual aspects of the human experience.

Holotropic Breathwork[edit]

After the prohibition of LSD and other psychedelics, Grof and his wife, Christina Grof, developed Holotropic Breathwork as an alternative method for achieving non-ordinary states of consciousness. This technique involves accelerated breathing, evocative music, and focused bodywork to facilitate deep psychological and spiritual experiences.
