Septoplasty

Septoplasty (pronunciation: sep-toe-plas-tee) is a surgical procedure performed to correct a deviated or crooked nasal septum. The nasal septum is the thin wall of bone and cartilage that separates the two nostrils. When it is deviated, it can cause breathing difficulties, nosebleeds, and other complications.

Etymology

The term "septoplasty" is derived from the Latin word "septum," meaning "partition," and the Greek word "plasty," meaning "formation."

Procedure

During a septoplasty, the surgeon works through the nostrils, making an incision in the septum to reach the targeted area. The deviated septum can then be moved into the correct position. Parts of the septum may be removed, or readjusted and reinserted into the nose.

Related Terms

  • Rhinoplasty: A surgical procedure that changes the shape of the nose.
  • Turbinate reduction: A procedure to reduce the size of the turbinates, which are structures on the side wall of the inside of the nose.
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery: A procedure used to remove blockages in the sinuses.
  • Deviated septum: A condition in which the nasal septum is significantly displaced to one side, making breathing difficult.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, septoplasty carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Other possible complications specific to septoplasty include a change in the shape of the nose, a hole in the septum, or failure to correct the deviation.

Recovery

Recovery from septoplasty typically takes a few weeks. Patients may experience some swelling and bruising, and may need to wear a nasal splint for up to a week after surgery.
