Second wine
Wine produced from the same vineyard as a more prestigious wine
Second wine
Second wine is a term used in the wine industry to describe a wine that is produced from the same vineyard as a more prestigious wine, often referred to as the first wine. The concept of second wines is particularly prevalent in the Bordeaux region of France, where many of the top châteaux produce a second wine in addition to their grand vin.
Production
Second wines are typically made from grapes that do not meet the strict quality standards required for the first wine. These grapes may come from younger vines, less favorable vineyard plots, or may be the result of a more rigorous selection process during harvest. The production methods for second wines are generally similar to those used for the first wine, but the aging process may be shorter, and the use of new oak barrels may be less extensive.
Characteristics
Second wines often share many of the characteristics of the first wine but are usually more approachable at a younger age. They tend to be less complex and less expensive, making them an attractive option for consumers who want to experience the style of a prestigious château without the high price tag. Second wines can offer excellent value and are often considered a good introduction to the wines of a particular estate.
Notable Examples
Some well-known examples of second wines include:
- Les Forts de Latour from Château Latour
- Carruades de Lafite from Château Lafite Rothschild
- Pavillon Rouge from Château Margaux
- Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild
Market and Reception
The market for second wines has grown significantly in recent years, with many wine enthusiasts and collectors recognizing their value. Second wines are often included in wine tastings and can be found on the wine lists of many fine dining restaurants. They are also popular in wine auctions, where they can sometimes fetch high prices, particularly for older vintages.
