Scientific journal
A Scientific journal is a periodical publication intended to further the progress of science, usually by reporting new research. Most journals are highly specialized, although some of the oldest journals such as Nature and Science publish articles and scientific papers across a wide range of scientific fields. Scientific journals contain articles that have been peer reviewed, in an attempt to ensure that articles meet the journal's standards of quality, and scientific validity.
History
The first scientific journals, Journal des Sçavans and the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, were created in the 17th century. Since that time, the number of journals has significantly increased. This is in part due to the increase in the number of scientists and the growth of different scientific disciplines.
Format
The format of scientific journals varies, but most follow the general process of peer review. Authors submit manuscripts to the journal, which are reviewed by experts in the field. The reviewers provide feedback and recommend whether the manuscript should be accepted, revised, or rejected. Accepted manuscripts are then published in the journal.
Types of articles
Scientific journals publish several types of articles. In addition to the standard research articles, other types of articles include review articles, short communications, and letters. Review articles provide an overview of recent advancements in a specific area of research. Short communications are brief articles that present original and significant material. Letters are short descriptions of important current research findings.
Access
Access to the content of scientific journals is often provided online, but also via print. Some journals are published exclusively online, while others are available in both formats. Many scientific journals are subscription-based, but there are also open access journals that make their content freely available.
