Information Science

Information Science (pronounced: /ˌɪnfərˈmeɪʃən ˈsaɪəns/) is an interdisciplinary field primarily concerned with the analysis, collection, classification, manipulation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information. It is often associated with computer science and information technology, but it involves psychology, management and other fields. Information science studies the application and usage of knowledge in organizations, along with the interaction between people, organizations, and any existing information systems, with the aim of creating, replacing, improving, or understanding information systems.

Etymology

The term "Information Science" is derived from the Latin word 'informatio', which means "forming or molding", and the Greek word 'σκιέν', which means "knowledge". It was first used in the mid-20th century to describe the new field of study related to the application of computers in storing and retrieving information.
