Psoriatic erythroderma
Psoriatic Erythroderma
Psoriatic erythroderma (pronunciation: /sɔːrɪˈatɪk ˌɛrɪθroʊˈdɜːrmə/) is a severe and rare form of psoriasis that affects almost the entire body surface. It is also known as erythrodermic psoriasis.
Etymology
The term "psoriatic erythroderma" is derived from three Greek words: "psora" meaning itch, "erythros" meaning red, and "derma" meaning skin.
Symptoms
The main symptom of psoriatic erythroderma is intense and widespread redness of the skin, often accompanied by severe itching and pain. Other symptoms may include fever, chills, and changes in the heart rate.
Causes
Psoriatic erythroderma can be triggered by a variety of factors, including abrupt withdrawal of systemic corticosteroids, severe sunburn, or by certain medications. It can also occur in people with unstable plaque psoriasis who experience a rapid disease progression.
Treatment
Treatment typically involves the use of systemic medications, such as methotrexate, cyclosporine, or biologics. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required.
