Pseudohermaphroditism (pronounced: soo-doh-her-maf-ro-dit-izm) is a medical term referring to an organism that is born with primary sex characteristics of one sex but develops the secondary sex characteristics that are different from what would be expected on the basis of the gonadal tissue (ovary or testis).

Etymology

The term "pseudohermaphroditism" is derived from the Greek words "pseudes" (false), "hermaphroditos" (hermaphrodite), referring to the mythological figure Hermaphroditus who was the child of Hermes and Aphrodite and possessed both male and female sex organs.

Types of Pseudohermaphroditism

There are two main types of pseudohermaphroditism: Male pseudohermaphroditism and Female pseudohermaphroditism.

  • Male pseudohermaphroditism is a condition in which an individual has male gonads (testes), but female or ambiguous secondary sexual characteristics.
  • Female pseudohermaphroditism is a condition in which an individual has female gonads (ovaries), but male or ambiguous secondary sexual characteristics.

Causes

Pseudohermaphroditism can be caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Some of the most common causes include Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Androgen insensitivity syndrome, and 5-alpha-reductase deficiency.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of pseudohermaphroditism often involves a combination of physical examination, medical history, and laboratory tests. Genetic testing may also be used to confirm the diagnosis and identify the underlying cause.

Treatment

Treatment for pseudohermaphroditism depends on the underlying cause and the individual's personal preferences. It may include hormone therapy, surgery, or a combination of both.
