Pierce County, Wisconsin is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 42,754. The county seat is Ellsworth.

History

Pierce County was created in 1853 from parts of St. Croix County and organized in 1854. It is named after President Franklin Pierce.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 592 square miles, of which 576 square miles is land and 16 square miles (2.7%) is water. The county is noted for its hilly terrain and its association with the Mississippi River, which forms its western border.

As of the 2020 census, there were 42,754 people, 16,826 households, and 11,540 families residing in the county. The population density was 74.2 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of African Americans, Asian Americans, and other groups.

The economy of Pierce County is primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The county benefits from its proximity to the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, with many residents commuting to the cities for work.
