Pediatric Gynaecology

Pediatric Gynaecology (pronounced: pe-di-at-ric gy-ne-col-o-gy), also known as Pediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology, is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological conditions in children and adolescents.

Etymology

The term "Pediatric Gynaecology" is derived from three words: "Pediatric", which comes from the Greek words pais (child) and iatros (doctor); "Gynaecology", which comes from the Greek words gyne (woman) and logia (study). Thus, it refers to the medical practice that involves the study and treatment of female reproductive health in children and adolescents.

Overview

Pediatric Gynaecology involves the medical and surgical management of disorders of the female reproductive system that occur from birth through adolescence. It includes conditions related to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva.

Common conditions treated in Pediatric Gynaecology include menstrual disorders, congenital anomalies of the female reproductive tract, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and gynaecological infections.
