Nassau County, New York is a suburban county on Long Island, immediately east of New York City. As of the 2020 United States Census, the county's population was 1,395,774, making it the seventh-most populous county in the state of New York. Nassau County is part of the New York metropolitan area and is located within the boundaries of the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Mineola, and its largest town is Hempstead.
History[edit]
Nassau County was formed in 1899 by the division of Queens County, New York, after the western portion of Queens became a borough of New York City. The county was named after the Dutch Prince William of Nassau, the future William III. Its creation was part of the suburban boom of the early 20th century, which saw the population and infrastructure of Nassau County rapidly expand.
Geography[edit]
Nassau County is situated on the western part of Long Island, bordered by Queens to the west, Suffolk County to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, and Long Island Sound to the north.
