Hofstra University is a private university located in Hempstead, New York, on Long Island. It was founded in 1935 and has grown to become a comprehensive institution offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.

History[edit]

Hofstra University was originally established as an extension of New York University (NYU) in 1935. It became an independent institution in 1939 and was granted university status in 1963. The university is named after William S. Hofstra, a Dutch immigrant whose estate was used to establish the campus.

Academics[edit]

Hofstra University offers a diverse array of academic programs through its various schools and colleges. These include the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, the Maurice A. Deane School of Law, and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
